Laughter

Laughter is a pleasant physical reaction created by emotions that cause the diaphragm and lungs to produce audible and pleasant sounds. Our laughter is like our personal fingerprint; no two are the same. Adversely, we are given two forms of communication: one is crying, and the other is laughter. Laughter is our basic and first communication.

According to some philosophies, laughter is a response to God's tremendous love and the grace He shares upon us. When life presents us with the good, the bad, and the ugly - challenges and victories - laughter is there to help us through.

Laughter is there when we experience humor, and sometimes it's an expression that strengthens our silent communication and allows us to move through life.

We have many forms of laughter: it can be a giggle, a chuckle, or even a deep, tear-producing belly laugh. Humans tend to laugh at the strangest things and sometimes for no reason. We can laugh when we're nervous, we can laugh when we're happy, and we can laugh at a simple memory.

Laughter is physically healing and psychologically it lessens pain and can improve our moods.

  • Laughter increases the immune system.

  • Laughter releases endorphins.

  • Laughter reduces stress and anxiety.

  • Laughter stimulates our organs and increases oxygen.

  • Laughter stimulates the heart, lungs, and our muscles.

  • Laughter changes the cells in our body.

We can smile to ourselves when we have accomplished something or when a moment of humor crosses our minds and allows us to bring a soothing thought to what we're doing.

I was in the doctor's office, a place of dread, fear, and doubts. I heard a baby laughing, and so did everyone else. We looked in the direction of the sound to see if we could find the source of that joy. To our amazement, no baby was anywhere in sight. The grandparents had put the laughter of their grandchild on their phone as a ringtone. Hearing that pure, unsolicited joy brought a new mood to all who were waiting in the waiting room.

Babies' laughter and giggles make the angels smile; it is the heavenly sound and the voice of the divine. It can access your own creation and your true consciousness with the divine essence of your internal being.

I did a workshop one time where all we did was laugh and laugh and laugh. We all felt healthier, happier, and in a state of euphoria.

One time, a group of people were creating a tape. As soon as the tape started, someone caught laughter. It was very contagious, and everyone started to laugh. No matter what they did, they could not stop. The tape continued to record, and soon they had an hour of laughter, which became a very popular tape. They now teach classes where, for one hour, you laugh, and you are amazed by the benefits of this beautiful laughter.

There's a true story from many years ago about a man who had an unknown illness. The doctors had no hope for him and could not figure out what was wrong. He asked for tapes of comedies so he could watch them and constantly watched tapes of The Three Stooges, Lucille Ball, and other tapes from that period. Much to the amazement of his doctors, he was cured. Laughter changes the DNA and the body at the cellular level, creating an environment for healing.

I was at the movies one time with my small daughter, and she was sitting next to me. I really needed to have this wonderful time laughing at this incredibly funny movie. I was laughing so hard my whole body was shaking, and occasionally my daughter would say, "Mommy, you're bouncing me around." Of course, this just made me laugh even harder.

Laughter is something we can share with others, share with ourselves, and share with love in motion.

Every Tuesday evening, I have a heart-centered meditation at my center in Mesa, Arizona. I call it the open-heart meditation. I guide the group into our heart’s center, feeling it with joy, feeling it expands and vibrates faster and faster until we become our true essence as beings of light.

If anyone is in the Phoenix or Mesa area, please give me a call and be part of our open-heart meditation.
